Some tips for economical driving in Belgrade

Car rental is allowed for all adults who meet the requirements of the car rental agency. Some drivers often overestimate their driving skills and have to visit the gas station more often and more quickly. You should know that when a vehicle is rented, fuel costs fall on the driver. The amount of fuel you rented the vehicle with is the amount you need to return, otherwise you have to pay the difference. Which can be large.

Some economical driving skills will help you extend the time between fillings up at the gas station and thus save on fuel. Regardless of whether you are an experienced car driver or a beginner, there is always room to improve your driving skills regarding fuel economy, especially in a city like Belgrade.

Here are some tips on how to obtain that:

Turn off the engine while you wait

We already know the length of the wait at some traffic lights. All drivers have experienced those situations every day in Belgrade and other larger cities. Well, we can turn off the engine. The car does not have to be left on for several minutes because that is simply unacceptable. It is recommended to turn off the engine if we know we will be standing for more than a minute or two. Although you have rented a vehicle, do not forget that you pay for the used fuel.

Gradual acceleration and deceleration

The higher the car speed, the larger is fuel consumption. Drivers like to press harder on the gas pedal, to suddenly accelerate and brake without obvious reasons. However, do you know that such sudden acceleration increases fuel consumption by up to 20%? The economic optimal speed is in a range of 70-90 km/h, a higher speed results in increased fuel consumption.

Monitor the traffic situation

Good monitoring of the traffic situation, in a large city like Belgrade, will prevent sudden braking and stress for you and the car. It is necessary to assume the movement and behavior of other traffic participants. Experience can help us understand traffic situations and to adapt more easily.

Avoid crowded streets

Who likes to spend endless time in traffic on the way to or from work? In addition to wasted time and nerves, remember how many times you stopped and started the vehicle and increased fuel consumption. If "stop and go" is in your blood, try to change it a little. Check alternative routes or try to avoid rush hour traffic.

Check the tire pressure

The tires on our vehicles require some maintenance. They should be sufficiently and precisely inflated because their condition affects, first of all, our safety, and then their lifespan and fuel efficiency. The cars are more fuel efficient if the tires are properly inflated. If the pressure is lower than the optimum, the fuel consumption increases. It is recommended to check the tires at least twice a month.

Remove unnecessary weight from the vehicle

More weight, more fuel consumption. People tend to leave things in their cars. Maybe for some things, it is justified, but for some unimportant not only that is unnecessary but is also harmful. For example, we certainly don't need beach chairs in the car during the winter. So, don't turn your car into warehouse.

Remove the roof racks and boxes attached to the top of the car

The effect of roof racks is similar to that of windows left open, but a little worse. The supports on the roof of the car increase the resistance to the movement of the vehicle in such a way that - the higher the speed of the car, the more fuel it needs to move. So keep in mind that the roof racks can be easily attached or detached and do not need to be permanently installed on the vehicle.

Adjust the gear to the current speed

A timely change of gear makes the difference between good and bad drivers. Fortunately, new vehicles have an indication of the optimal gear ratio, which drivers should always use if they want to save fuel.

Closed windows and sunroof

During the hot days, it's really fun to drive with the open windows. But it comes at a price. The wind noise that we hear when the windows are open is actually an additional load for the vehicle because it creates resistance to movement and therefore increases fuel consumption. Sometimes the air conditioner is turned on while the windows are opened, which from the point of view of fuel consumption, let us say, is quite arrogant.

How to choose rent a car agency that’s best for you, when you come to Belgrade

Renting a car can significantly enhance your travel experience, offering flexibility and freedom to explore the vibrant city of Belgrade at your own pace. However, with numerous rental agencies at the airport Nikola Tesla vying for your attention, selecting the optimal one can be daunting. This guide aims to equip you with essential insights and criteria to choose the perfect car rental agency for your journey through Belgrade.

Research and Compare

Begin your quest by conducting thorough research on various car rental agencies operating in Belgrade. Utilize online platforms, such as travel forums, review websites, and official agencies' websites, to gather information regarding available options, pricing, vehicle models, and customer feedback. Pay close attention to reviews from travelers who have previously rented cars in Belgrade to gain valuable insights into the quality of service provided by different agencies.

Assess Rental Policies

Before committing to a car rental agency, carefully review their rental policies to ensure they align with your preferences and requirements. Pay attention to crucial details such as rental duration, mileage limits, fuel policies, insurance coverage, and any additional fees or charges. Opt for agencies that offer transparent and flexible policies, allowing you to customize your rental experience according to your specific needs.

Consider Fleet Diversity

Choose a car rental agency that boasts a diverse fleet of vehicles to cater to various preferences and travel requirements. Whether you prefer compact cars for navigating narrow city streets or spacious SUVs for long-distance journeys, opt for an agency that offers a wide selection of well-maintained vehicles from reputable manufacturers. Additionally, inquire about the availability of optional features such as GPS navigation systems, child seats, and vehicle accessories to enhance your driving experience.

Evaluate Customer Support

Superior customer support can significantly enhance your car rental experience, especially when navigating unfamiliar territories. Prioritize agencies that offer reliable customer support services, including 24/7 assistance hotlines, roadside assistance, and multilingual support staff. Prompt and effective communication channels are essential for addressing any concerns or emergencies that may arise during your journey, ensuring a hassle-free rental experience.

Factor in Pricing and Discounts

While cost is undoubtedly a crucial factor in selecting a car rental agency, prioritize value over price alone. Request comprehensive price quotes from multiple agencies, taking into account all applicable fees, taxes, and insurance costs. Additionally, inquire about any ongoing promotions, discounts, or loyalty programs that could potentially lower your rental expenses. However, be wary of agencies offering excessively low prices, as they may compromise on service quality or impose hidden charges.

Prioritize Safety and Reliability

When choosing a car rental agency, prioritize safety and reliability to ensure a secure and stress-free travel experience. Opt for agencies that adhere to rigorous maintenance standards, regularly inspecting and servicing their vehicles to guarantee optimal performance and safety. Additionally, verify the agency's reputation for punctuality and reliability in delivering reserved vehicles as scheduled, minimizing any potential delays or inconveniences during your trip.

Conclusion

Selecting the ideal car rental agency for your journey through Belgrade requires careful consideration of various factors, including pricing, policies, fleet diversity, customer support, safety, and reliability. By conducting thorough research, comparing available options, and prioritizing your preferences and requirements, you can confidently choose an agency that best suits your needs, ensuring a memorable and enjoyable travel experience in the vibrant capital of Serbia.

7 TIPS FOR CAR RENTAL IN BELGRADE

Car renal Beograd
Belgrade. Ivan Stanivukovic by Pixels

Car rental in Belgrade is no longer a privilege of the rich. Now it is one of the options that will allow you to:
  • complete your transport needs faster and easier
  • allows you to drive new and attractive car models
  • save money
But before entering the rent-a-car agency you should familiarize yourself with the most common questions and concerns.

In addition, we list several tips regarding car rental in Belgrade that will help you decide on the best option.

1. RESERVE THE VEHICLE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Early bookings are recommended for at least two reasons:

It's cheaper - if you book a few weeks or months in advance, you can get the desired vehicle much cheaper.

It's easier to desire a vehicle - during the holidays, weekends, and tourist season. etc., there's a big rush to rent a car agency. There may be no available vehicles. With an early reservation, customers can be absolutely sure that the model and class of vehicle that suits them will be waiting at the parking. Early reservations are made online and are very easy, you need just a few clicks.

2. CHECK THE VEHICLE DOCUMENTS

Before renting a vehicle, ask the staff to show you and hand over all the necessary documents. Before signing the contract, check whether:
  • the registration has expired,
  • the vehicle is insured,
  • the driving license and all other car documents are in order, etc.
In that way, you act preventively and avoid potential and completely unnecessary troubles and fines.

3. TAKE PHOTOS OF THE VEHICLE BEFORE YOU PICK IT UP

Before you pick up your vehicle, take a picture of it. Likewise when you return it. Small scratches, torn seats, and smaller defects made by the previous driver can slip by unnoticed and fall on you. A photo is your proof, and today with modern smartphones, taking a picture is not difficult at all. That way, no one can falsely accuse you of causing any damage to the vehicle.

4. CHOOSE A CAR ACCORDING TO YOUR NEEDS

Choose a car according to your wishes and needs. For example, if the vehicle is needed for a long trip, you should choose a sedan or limousine, if you need to drive around town, you choose a smaller city car, for off-road trips, choose a robust and durable SUV, for celebration, wedding, birthday, etc., rent a some luxurious variants. For some clients, choosing an adequate vehicle is very hard, because they cannot choose the right car that will best meet their needs. Maybe, it's a good idea to do a test drive before signing the contract.

5. PAY THE DEPOSIT BY CREDIT CARD

When you rent a vehicle in Belgrade, you must pay a deposit for the vehicle. It can be paid by credit card or cash. But, our recommendation is to pay it by credit card. When you pay it in cash, it may happen that the agents do not have enough cash to refund you, so you will have to wait for it to be paid into your bank account. If you pay the deposit with a credit card, the amount is automatically refunded when you return the car.

6. BE AWARE OF FUEL CONSUMPTION

In most Belgrade rental car agencies, vehicles are picked up and returned with the same amount of fuel. When returning the vehicle, the difference in the quantity of fuel is charged at 3 euros/liter, as well as the refueling service at the price of 10 euros. To avoid these situations, be aware of your fuel consumption and leave enough time to visit the nearest gas station to fill up the tank.

7. RENT A VEHICLE FROM A REPUTABLE AGENCY

If you are renting a vehicle in Belgrade, it is best to rent it from a reputable, safe and well-known company. Use the services of only those rental car agencies that are legal, registered in the register of the Agency for Commercial Registers (APR), has own ID number and PIN number, and all other necessary papers for work. Try to find an agency that has no hidden costs waiting for you when you return the vehicle that has clear lease terms and no "small print" in the contract. If you have had a pleasant experience with some car rental agency before, stick with it and don't change it.

If it's your first time in Belgrade, and you don't know the situation, take the time to research, check social networks, look at reviews and comments from (un)satisfied clients, ask someone who often uses rented vehicles, etc. We live in the age of the Internet; today nothing can be hidden, so take some time and explore all options and possibilities.

A short guide about car rental in Belgrade

Beograd saobraćaj
Beograd noću (izvor Ivan Stanivukovic, Pixels)

The process of renting a car from rent a car agencies in Belgrade and Serbia can seem too complicated and with a lot of problems and unknowns. To help you, we have created a short guide about renting a car in Belgrade.

Necessary documents

  • Most importantly driver must have an identification document and driver's license;
  • must present a valid driver's license for a minimum of 2 years;
  • Another important and mandatory condition is that the driver is not younger than 21 years. This age limit varies with different agencies, so the limit can be set at 23 or 25 years;
  • The rented vehicle cannot be driven by persons who are not authorized and registered in the contract with a car rental agency. If some damage occurs to the vehicle while it was driven by an unauthorized person, the signatory of the contract must pay for the damage.

Length of lease

  • The minimum rental length is 1 day (24 hours). Most agencies do not tolerate delays if the allowed period is exceeded, it is charged as a new day;
  • If it is returned before the agreed time, there is no refund of payment for unused time;
  • If the vehicle is not collected at the agreed time, there is no guarantee that it will continue to be available;
  • When picking up the car, customers have to fill and sign a vehicle condition form;
  • The vehicle should be thoroughly inspected and every complaint must be documented, subsequent complaints will not be accepted;
  • Returning and picking up the vehicle outside of working hours is charged additionally (not the case with all agencies);
  • The vehicle is collected correctly and cleanly so that should be returned in such condition.

Driving abroad

Using the vehicle outside the borders of Serbia is not allowed without the consent of the rent a car agency.

The green card is (still) mandatory for Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia, and at the request of the client, the agency can mediate the issuance of this document. Green Card is an international certificate of MTPL insurance. The form itself represents the evidence of contracted MTPL insurance, i.e. the evidence that a vehicle had a valid insurance coverage at the time of its use abroad.

Methods of payment

  • payment is made when picking up the vehicle;
  • It can be paid in cash or by credit card;
  • A deposit is required for every rented vehicle. The amount of payment is determined depending on the length of the lease.
  • VAT is included in the rental price;
  • Fuel is not included in the rental price.

Insurance

This is the most complex question. The most common insurance packages offered by car rental agencies are;
  • basic insurance;
  • third party damage insurance
  • collision damage waiver - CDW;
  • theft protection - TP;
  • personal accident insurance;
  • some special packages that are offered. Each car rental agency has its own insurance packages, so it is necessary to view their website and to study in detail what each one offers and what the premium prices are.
Through the web site is very easy to book a vehicle for several days, weeks, or months in advance.

Bottom line

Renting a car in Belgrade is very similar to that in any city and country, but there are still small differences. We hope we have helped you a little.
